Braves pitcher Michael Soroka will not pitch for the rest of the 2023 season due to a forearm injury. However, the silver lining is that he will not require surgery like he did in the past. This is a positive outcome since surgery was necessary for his previous injury, a torn Achilles in 2020. Unfortunately, the Achilles injury sidelined Soroka for the remainder of that season as well as the following two seasons.
During the current season, Soroka made seven appearances, including six starts, accumulating a 6.40 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 32 1/3 innings. After his most recent outing, he experienced numbness in his fingers on his pitching hand. The Braves athletic training staff diagnosed him with forearm inflammation, but fortunately, no tears were found. Soroka will now be shut down and will focus on rehabbing his arm before the 2024 spring training.
Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed that Soroka will not return this year and will instead focus on his offseason program. Soroka had a promising start to his career, finishing second in NL Rookie of the Year voting and sixth in Cy Young voting in 2019. In that season, he had a 2.68 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 142 strikeouts. He also served as the Braves’ Opening Day starter in 2020.
