Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the National Bank Open in Toronto “due to fatigue,” Tennis Canada announced Sunday. He has won the Canadian Open singles title four times.
In a statement, Djokovic said, “I have always enjoyed my time in Canada but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to take. I would like to thank Karl Hale, the Tournament Director, for understanding this decision. I really hope I can return to Canada and Toronto in the coming years to play in front of great fans there.”
Djokovic recently lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon, where Alcaraz captured his second Grand Slam title.
With Djokovic’s withdrawal, American Chris Eubanks has received an entry into the main draw of the National Bank Open. Eubanks made a deep run in this year’s Wimbledon as an unseeded player, defeating top-ranked players along the way.
Tournament director Karl Hale expressed disappointment at Djokovic’s absence but assured fans that there are still many top-ranked players participating in the event.
The 2023 National Bank Open will take place from August 4-13, with the men’s event in Toronto and the women’s event in Montreal.
