The Ottawa Senators have made a significant signing in the NHL free agency market, securing winger Vladimir Tarasenko to a one-year contract worth $5 million.
Tarasenko spent the previous season with the New York Rangers after being traded by the St. Louis Blues. Last season, the 31-year-old forward scored 18 goals and accumulated 50 points playing for both St. Louis and New York.
When Tarasenko is in good health, he is a formidable offensive threat known for his powerful shot. He has scored a total of 262 goals in 644 career games, surpassing the 30-goal mark on six occasions in his 11 seasons. In the 2019 playoffs, Tarasenko contributed 11 goals, playing a crucial role in leading the Blues to their first-ever Stanley Cup victory.
In recent years, injuries have been a major hurdle for Tarasenko. As a member of the Blues, he underwent three shoulder surgeries, significantly impacting his performance between 2019 and 2021. However, Tarasenko showcased his abilities at full strength during the 2021-2022 season, scoring 34 goals and recording 82 points.
After trading away Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings earlier in the offseason, the Senators have signed Tarasenko to help fill the gap on their wing. While Tarasenko may not possess the same level of dynamic play as DeBrincat, he brings offensive firepower and veteran leadership to the team as they continue to rebuild.
