Toronto Blue Jays All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette had to leave his team’s game against the Orioles on Monday night due to a non-contact injury to his right leg. The club announced it as “right knee discomfort.” It is unclear whether this is a preliminary diagnosis or if further tests will be conducted.
Bichette sustained the injury while rounding first base after hitting a single to right field in the third inning. As he tried to stop his progress towards second base, his leg appeared to give out. After being tagged out on the play, he limped off the field with the help of a trainer. Santiago Espinal replaced him at shortstop in the fourth inning. The following video shows the play:
After the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider stated that they are still gathering information about Bichette’s injury, according to SI.com. Bichette himself described the injury as a “jammed” knee and mentioned that they will have more information on Tuesday.
This season, the 25-year-old shortstop has impressive stats with a .321 batting average, .352 on-base percentage, and .494 slugging percentage. He leads the American League with 144 hits, including 17 home runs. Bichette plays a crucial role in the Blue Jays’ push for a playoff spot, so losing him for an extended period would be a significant setback.
Following their loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the Toronto Blue Jays, with a record of 59-48, are currently a half-game behind the Houston Astros for the second wild-card spot in the American League.
