Texas Rangers’ rookie third baseman and All-Star, Josh Jung, fractured his thumb on his left (non-throwing) hand, according to manager Bruce Bochy. The incident happened in the sixth inning of Texas’ 6-0 win against the Marlins when Jung tried to catch a hard hit ball by Jorge Soler. Jung managed to stop the ball but injured his thumb while starting a double play.
Following Jung’s departure, Josh Smith moved to third base from shortstop, and Ezequiel Duran took the position of shortstop. It is currently uncertain how long Jung will be out due to the injury, but it is expected to be a lengthy absence. Jung, a 25-year-old former No. 8 overall pick from Texas Tech, has been impressive in 109 games with the Rangers this season, batting .274/.323/.489 with 22 home runs and 24 doubles. Additionally, he is considered an above-average defensive player at third base and was selected for the All-Star Game.
The Rangers have exceeded expectations this season, with Jung being a key contributor to their success. Sunday’s victory marked their sixth consecutive win, improving their record to 66-46 for the season. They continue to hold a 2.5-game lead over the Astros in the American League West standings.
