Alex Meruelo, Owner of the Coyotes, Eyes Mesa, Arizona as Potential Site for New Arena

The Arizona Coyotes, who were unsuccessful in their attempt to construct a new arena and entertainment district in Tempe, have turned their attention to another city. In an announcement made on Wednesday, the Coyotes revealed that owner Alex Meruelo is exploring the possibility of finding a permanent home in Mesa, Arizona.

In May, Tempe voters rejected the Coyotes’ proposal to build a new arena, entertainment district, and residential housing. This setback forced the franchise to reevaluate and search for a long-term solution in Arizona. Meruelo has identified Mesa as a potential option.

The team’s official statement confirms that Meruelo has “executed a Letter of Intent to purchase a parcel of land located in Mesa, Arizona.” Despite rumors of possible relocation in the coming years, the Coyotes emphasize their commitment to keeping the franchise in Arizona permanently.

“We deeply appreciate the overwhelming support from numerous communities, elected officials, and community leaders who have expressed their desire to see the Coyotes continue in the Valley for the long term,” the team expressed in their statement. The Coyotes also thanked NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly for their unwavering support in the team’s pursuit of a permanent arena solution and their recognition of Arizona’s significant hockey market.

Additionally, the team announced that they will explore other potential sites in the East Valley.

Presently, the Coyotes share Mullett Arena with Arizona State University’s hockey program. Following the loss of Gila River Arena after the 2021-22 season, the team reached an agreement to play at Mullett Arena with Arizona State until at least the 2024-25 season, with an option to continue for the 2025-26 season.

This offseason, the Coyotes have made roster improvements by acquiring players such as Sean Durzi, Jason Zucker, Alexander Kerfoot, and Matt Dumba. As they strive to emerge from the NHL’s lowest rankings, the Coyotes are actively seeking stability in the desert.
