Cal and Stanford’s attempt to join the ACC seems to have hit a roadblock. North Carolina, NC State, Florida State and Clemson have expressed their opposition to the addition of Stanford and Cal, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.
Without the support of these schools, the expansion may not move forward. It requires approval from 12 out of 15 ACC member schools, as reported by Sports Illustrated.
Cal and Stanford are among the four remaining Pac-12 schools, along with Oregon State and Washington State. The Pac-12 conference has been losing members in recent years, and there was a major upheaval in July.
USC and UCLA are set to leave for the Big Ten in 2024, while Colorado recently announced its departure for the Big 12 during the same period. Soon after, Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah decided to follow Colorado’s lead and join the Big 12.
On August 4, Washington and Oregon dealt what seemed to be the final blow to the Pac-12 by announcing their intention to join the Big Ten.
According to multiple sources, the remaining Pac-12 schools may find a new home in the American Athletic Conference. The Mountain West Conference, which makes sense geographically, has not ruled out the possibility of expansion.
