The New Jersey Devils have acquired winger Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames in exchange for the rights to pending restricted free agent Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 third-round pick.
Toffoli, who had an impressive season with the Flames, has one year remaining on his current contract. He set career highs in goals (34), assists (39), and points (73) during the 2022-23 season. He is expected to join New Jersey’s top six forwards, which includes Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Nico Hischier.
In addition to his on-ice performance, Toffoli brings experience and a championship pedigree to the Devils. Throughout his NHL career, he has accumulated 227 goals and 239 assists in 733 games. He also played a key role in helping the Los Angeles Kings win the Stanley Cup in 2014.
With Toffoli now on their roster, the Devils’ general manager, Tom Fitzgerald, will shift his focus to extending Timo Meier, who had a successful 40-goal season.
The Flames, amid a turbulent offseason, have acquired the negotiating rights to 25-year-old Sharangovich. Sharangovich showed promise in New Jersey, and the Flames hope to build upon that potential. Last season, he recorded 13 goals and 17 assists in 75 games, and in the previous season, he scored 24 goals.
