The Tampa Bay Rays have released a statement regarding shortstop Wander Franco and the allegations made against him on social media. The team says they were made aware of these posts on Sunday and Major League Baseball is currently investigating the matter.

In their statement, the Rays acknowledged the social media posts about Franco and stated that they are taking the situation seriously. They are closely communicating with MLB as the league conducts its own investigation.

Rays manager Kevin Cash addressed the speculation after the team’s loss to the Guardians on Sunday. He confirmed that he was aware of the speculation but did not provide any further comments. Cash also clarified that Franco’s absence from the lineup on Sunday was planned, as he was scheduled to have a day off, and it was unrelated to the social media allegations.

Instead of Franco, the Rays had infielder Osleivis Basabe playing at shortstop during the game. Basabe was called up for his debut, while left-handed pitcher Josh Fleming was sent down.

Franco, 22, signed an 11-year extension with the Rays in November 2021. He made his first All-Star Game appearance this season and currently has a batting average of .281/.344/.475 in 112 games.
