The Detroit Red Wings have acquired Jeff Petry, a veteran defenseman, from the Montreal Canadiens. In exchange, the Red Wings have sent defenseman Gustav Lindstrom and a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick to the Canadiens.
Petry, 35, is entering his 14th NHL season. He spent the 2022-23 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before being traded to the Canadiens earlier this month. The Canadiens will retain 50% of Petry’s remaining salary.
The addition of Petry will strengthen the Red Wings’ defensive lineup, which already includes players like Moritz Seider, Justin Holl, Jake Walman, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Ben Chiarot. Last season, Petry recorded five goals and 26 assists in 61 games with the Penguins, and he had a 53.9% expected goals control at five-on-five according to Natural Stat Trick.
With Petry on board, the Red Wings are looking to improve their performance on defense. In the 2022-23 season, Detroit allowed 279 goals against, ranking 23rd in the league. General manager Steve Yzerman has been active in rebuilding the team, with the acquisition of Petry being one of the notable moves.
Gustav Lindstrom, a second-round pick by the Red Wings in 2017, will now have the opportunity to establish himself as a full-time NHL player with the Canadiens.
