James Harden has expressed his frustration with the Philadelphia 76ers, stating that he believes his relationship with the team is beyond repair. After returning from China, where he publicly criticized 76ers president Daryl Morey, Harden talked about his patience and focus on the upcoming season.
“I’ve been patient all summer,” said Harden. “For me, it’s just focus on what I can control and getting ready for this season.”
When asked if he thinks his relationship with the Sixers is beyond repair, Harden responded, “I think so.”
Frustrations have not changed for Harden since he requested a trade in June and called out Morey earlier this week. He had opted into a $35.6 million player option with the 76ers in June, expecting a long-term offer this summer. However, the offer never materialized, leading to his trade request.
There are consequences if Harden holds out of training camp. According to the CBA, if he “withholds services” for more than 30 days and isn’t traded by the Sixers this season, he won’t be allowed to become a free agent next summer until Philadelphia agrees otherwise.
Both sides face a risky standoff, with Harden hoping the Sixers won’t invoke that clause and the team trying to get the best deal possible. The tension will continue to rise as the training camp approaches on October 3.
