Star center Auston Matthews has signed a four-year, $53 million contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to the team. The deal makes Matthews the highest-paid NHL player annually, with an average annual value of $13.25 million. Matthews still has one year left on his current contract before the extension kicks in.
In a social media post, Matthews expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue playing for the Maple Leafs and promised to do everything he can to help the team succeed. Last season, Matthews had an impressive performance, recording 85 points in the regular season and 11 points in the playoffs.
Matthews was the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and has been playing for the Maple Leafs for seven seasons. Throughout his career, he has accumulated 542 points in regular season games and 22 goals and 22 assists in the playoffs. He has also achieved numerous accolades, including winning the league’s MVP award and the Rocket Richard Trophy twice.
