The New York Yankees plan to add Jasson Domínguez to their major league roster once roster sizes expand from 26 to 28 players on September 1, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. Domínguez, a 20-year-old outfield prospect who can switch hit, was recently promoted to Triple-A. In his first eight games, he had a batting average of .444 with three extra-base hits and more walks than strikeouts. Domínguez had previously performed well in Double-A, hitting .254 with 15 home runs and 37 stolen bases. When he makes his MLB debut, he will be the youngest Yankee since Melky Cabrera in 2005.
Domínguez gained national attention when he signed with the Yankees for over $5 million in 2019. He is known by the nickname “Martian” because of his exceptional athletic abilities. Although some of the early comparisons may have been exaggerated, he is on track to have a successful big-league career, possibly sooner than expected.
The Yankees are currently going through a tough season and are more than four games behind the fourth-place Boston Red Sox in the AL East. They have started giving opportunities to younger players like Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira. In addition to Domínguez, the team will also promote Austin Wells to the majors.
More young players will be joining the Yankees in the near future. Austin Wells is set to be promoted on Friday, as reported by The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner.
