Novak Djokovic made history at the 2023 US Open by winning his 24th Grand Slam title, while Coco Gauff secured her first major championship. These victories highlight the mix of experience and youth in the world of tennis. At 36 years old, Djokovic became the oldest man to win the US Open in the professional era. On the other hand, 19-year-old Gauff became the youngest American, male or female, to win the title since Serena Williams in 1999. Interestingly, both Djokovic and Gauff also won the Cincinnati Masters 1000 last month.
The US Open celebrates its 50th anniversary of equal prize money this year, with the winners of the tournament each earning a $3 million paycheck.
Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory in the men’s final on Sunday. The three-set victory doesn’t fully reflect the intensity of the match, as Medvedev, currently ranked world No. 3, put up a strong fight, particularly in the second set which lasted one hour and 45 minutes. Djokovic, however, emerged as the winner and secured his fourth title at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Djokovic’s 24th Grand Slam title ties him with Margaret Court for the most major singles titles ever. He came into the tournament as world No. 2 but will now reclaim the No. 1 ranking, extending his own record of 389 weeks at the top.
In the women’s competition, Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka, who will soon become the world No. 1, in the final. Gauff’s victory also marks the first time since 2014 that a woman has won both the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and the US Open in the same year, following in the footsteps of Serena Williams.
Sabalenka had only lost one set throughout the tournament prior to the final. Although she won the first set against Gauff, the young American made a comeback and secured the victory after battling nerves. Gauff’s ranking is set to rise from No. 6 to a career-best No. 3 in the next rankings release.
Notable absentees from this year’s US Open included Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, and Nick Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist, both due to injuries.
