Over two months ago, Damian Lillard requested a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers, but it has not been granted yet. However, there is a possibility that this could change soon. As NBA training camps approach, the Blazers have increased the frequency of their trade talks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
Wojnarowski, ESPN’s veteran NBA reporter, provided an update on the situation. While no major shift has occurred, he noted that the Blazers have been more active recently compared to the summer. Wojnarowski stated that the Blazers have been exploring multi-team deals that would allow them to acquire the assets they desire, such as draft picks and young players. They have been in communication with several teams to find a deal structure that would facilitate a Damian Lillard trade.
The start of training camps, including the Blazers’, is scheduled for October 3rd (preseason games overseas begin on September 27th). If a trade is not completed by then, it could create an awkward situation for Lillard. He would either have to report to camp with the team he no longer wants to play for or hold out, risking financial loss and damage to his reputation.
The Blazers want to secure the best deal possible, which is why they have not yet traded Lillard to his preferred destination, the Miami Heat. However, they also want to avoid unnecessary drama. Having Lillard in camp while he desires a trade would be a distraction for a young team undergoing a rebuild.
Although there are no guarantees, it is clear that the Blazers now have a sense of urgency that was absent for much of the summer.
