Winger Brad Marchand has been named the 27th captain in franchise history, replacing Patrice Bergeron after his retirement announcement. Bergeron had been the Bruins’ captain since 2021, following in the footsteps of Zdeno Chara who served as captain since 2006.
Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs expressed his pride in Marchand and his growth as a player, acknowledging the opportunity he had to learn from leaders like Chara and Bergeron. Jacobs is confident that Marchand’s competitive nature and tenacity will be valued by the team, and that he will represent the organization with heart and grit.
Marchand joins a prestigious group of former Bruins captains, including Joe Thornton, Ray Bourque, and Johnny Bucyk, among others.
Marchand’s impressive career with the Bruins includes 862 points, 372 goals, and 490 assists since being drafted by the team in 2006. In the most recent season, he recorded 67 points, consisting of 21 goals and 46 assists.
Marchand also holds a place in Bruins history, ranking eighth in games played, fourth in game-winning goals, sixth in goals, seventh in points, and ninth in assists. He has excelled in the playoffs as well, scoring 53 goals in 146 postseason games over his 14-year NHL career.
In 2011, Marchand played a pivotal role in leading the Bruins to a Stanley Cup victory against the Vancouver Canucks, contributing 11 goals and eight assists during the series.
