If you thought you had witnessed some ridiculous own goals before, you hadn’t seen anything like this one. In a shocking 4-2 defeat against Sassuolo, Juventus defender Federico Gatti scored an unbelievable own goal to conclude the scoring. Despite managing to score two goals, Juventus, coached by Massimiliano Allegri, suffered their first loss of the season at the Mapei Stadium.
Sassuolo took an early lead with a goal from Armand Laurentie in the 12th minute. However, Matias Vina’s own goal, under pressure from American international Weston McKennie, equalized the score in the 21st minute. Just before halftime, Domenico Berardi scored another stunning goal for the home team. The second half remained goalless until the final ten minutes when Federico Chiesa scored to make it 2-2. At this point, it seemed like Juventus had a chance to push for a win, but Andrea Pinamonti scored the winning goal just four minutes later.
Just when you thought the match was over, Federico Gatti scored one of the most unbelievable own goals during stoppage time:
In the post-match press conference, Allegri addressed Gatti’s incredible mistake: “He has made mistakes before and he will make more in his career. He has played 30 games for Juventus, I believe. He needs to stay calm. The mistake was ugly to see, but it did not affect the result. We need to stay calm and focus on our next match against Lecce, the only team undefeated along with Inter.”
