Phil Nevin will not be returning as the manager of the Los Angeles Angels, according to an announcement from the team on Monday. While Nevin was not technically fired, his contract expired after the season and he was not offered a new one. This means that his tenure as the club’s manager has come to an end after a year-and-a-half. GM Perry Minasian is expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday to confirm his return as the GM.
After taking over as the interim manager midway through the 2022 season, Nevin led the Angels to a 46-60 finish. This led to Los Angeles giving him a one-year extension and the official title of manager. However, Nevin was unable to guide the Angels to their first postseason appearance since 2014. With the expected departure of Shohei Ohtani through free agency, the Angels could see several changes during the offseason.
Mike Trout, the star player for the Angels, recently expressed his support for Nevin getting another full season as the manager. Trout mentioned that he loves playing for Nevin and appreciates how he takes care of his players and wants the best for the team.
This dismissal makes Nevin the fourth manager to be let go by the Angels since the end of the 2018 season. They previously dismissed Mike Scioscia in the winter of 2018, Brad Ausmus after the 2019 season, and Joe Maddon last summer, whose availability led to Ausmus’ quick departure. It’s worth noting that the Angels have not had a winning season since 2015 and have not made the playoffs since 2014.
Prior to his time with the Angels, Nevin served as a third-base coach for the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees. He also had a 12-year playing career, where he achieved a .270/.343/.472 slash line (114 OPS+) and 15.9 Wins Above Replacement, according to Baseball-Reference.
