The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenseman Mark Friedman and forward Ty Glover from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a four-player trade. In exchange, the Canucks have sent defenseman Jack Rathbone and forward Karel Plasek to the Penguins, as announced by both teams on Tuesday.
Mark Friedman, who has the most NHL experience among the four players involved, will provide the Canucks with depth on the blue line. As the team deals with salary cap constraints, it is unclear whether Friedman will join the NHL club or report to the AHL.
Jack Rathbone, the 95th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, has primarily played for the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. With two goals and three assists in 28 NHL games, Rathbone will now join the Penguins’ minor-league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Karel Plasek, a sixth-round pick by the Canucks in 2017, has not yet made his NHL debut. He has been playing in the Czech league and will now be assigned to the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers.
Ty Glover, originally from England, played college hockey at Western Michigan before signing with the Penguins. In 51 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton team, Glover recorded seven goals and five assists.
