NJ/NY Gotham FC won their first-ever NWSL playoff game on Sunday, defeating the North Carolina Courage 2-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park. The only goal of the game was scored just before halftime by midfielder Delanie Sheehan. The goal was a result of a well-built play with the ball eventually being passed to Sheehan, who made a run and scored her first NWSL goal.
Although the Courage had more possession in the first half, Gotham’s defense limited them to only one off-target shot. Gotham, on the other hand, had six shots but only one on target. They were missing Kerolin, the MVP candidate who suffered an ACL injury on Decision Day.

Both teams increased their offensive efforts in the second half, with Tyler Lussi creating several chances for the Courage. However, Gotham stood strong and eventually scored a second goal in stoppage time through Yazmeen Ryan.
This victory marks Gotham’s first-ever NWSL playoff win in their third postseason appearance. It was also Sheehan’s first goal for the club.
Gotham will play again on Nov. 5 against the Portland Thorns for a spot in the NWSL Championship.
What’s next
Megan Rapinoe is not the only legendary player who extended her career in the quarterfinals. The win for Gotham means Ali Krieger, another two-time Women’s World Cup winner, will also get the chance to play another game when the team faces Portland in two weeks, which could be crucial for the team’s success.
Gotham’s attacking trio of Midge Purce, Esther Gonzalez, and Lynn Williams played a central role in the team’s victory. Their defensive effort limited the Courage to only five shots and an expected goals value of 0.31. They will face a tough challenge against the Thorns, who have the Golden Boot winner Sophia Smith.
