During Manchester City’s Champions League match against Young Boys, Erling Haaland scored two goals, including an impressive one, as City secured a 3-1 victory with three second-half goals. Despite Haaland’s recent goal drought of three games, which is considered unusual for him, manager Pep Guardiola has specific thoughts regarding the output of his star striker and the way he assesses him.
“I’ve told him many times I don’t judge him based on goals, even though he has the desire to score,” Guardiola said following the game. “He is focused on improving, and I have no doubts about that.”

The danger that Haaland poses lies in his ability to find space and create opportunities for City, regardless of how long it has been since he last scored a goal. This psychological advantage wore down Young Boys and contributed to City’s victory. Despite his “slow” start to the season, Haaland has managed to score 11 goals and provide two assists in 14 matches. However, given his remarkable performance of 52 goals and nine assists in 53 matches last season, he has set an incredibly high bar for himself.
“After last season, it seems like he needs to score seven goals every game, but that’s impossible,” Guardiola commented. “Nevertheless, he is scoring a lot of goals, and even if people want him to fail because he doesn’t reach 50 goals, it doesn’t matter. He continues to deliver.”
Haaland’s second goal during the match against Young Boys showcased his skill. Despite being surrounded by defenders, he managed to break free and unleash a powerful shot.
If Haaland can consistently perform like this, there is no reason why City can’t win both the Premier League and the Champions League once again. Even in a season where his goal tally is slightly lower, it would still be impressive and unmatched.
