Former Pittsburgh Penguins player Adam Johnson passed away at the age of 29 due to an unexpected injury during an Elite Ice Hockey League game in England. Johnson’s team, the Nottingham Panthers, announced the tragic news.
The Panthers described Johnson as an outstanding player and a great teammate who had a bright future ahead. They expressed their deep sadness and stated that Johnson will always be remembered.
Prior to playing in the Elite Ice Hockey League, Johnson played in the NHL with the Penguins for two seasons. He also had stints in the American Hockey League, Sweden, and Germany.
The Pittsburgh Penguins also released a statement mourning Johnson’s untimely death. They extended their condolences to his family, friends, and teammates and emphasized that Johnson will always be considered part of the Penguins family.
The incident occurred during the second period of the game when Johnson was hit by a skate blade in the neck. Play was halted as players formed a ring around him, and protective screens were put up. However, as the severity of the situation became apparent, the players were sent to the locker rooms. Fans were also asked to leave the arena due to a “major medical emergency.”
Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice before being taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. Following the incident, all games scheduled for Sunday were postponed by the Elite Ice Hockey League.
The EIHL expressed their condolences to Johnson’s family, friends, and teammates and requested respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
