Philadelphia 76ers’ Kelly Oubre Jr. was involved in a motor vehicle accident while walking near his home in Philadelphia. He sustained broken ribs, bruises, and cuts, but is in stable condition, according to The Athletic. While he is expected to be out for a significant amount of time, none of his injuries are expected to end his season, as per ESPN. Oubre will be receiving treatment from the 76ers’ medical staff.
The 76ers released a statement regarding the incident, expressing their concern and support for Oubre’s recovery.
“Kelly Oubre Jr. was a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle tonight in Center City, Philadelphia. He is currently in stable condition and being treated at a local hospital. We will share more information as it becomes available. Please join us in sending our best to Kelly and his family as he recovers from the incident.”
It was reported that Oubre was hit in the chest by a speeding vehicle that then fled the scene, according to Philadelphia police.
Oubre, in his ninth NBA season, had recently joined the 76ers after playing for the Wizards, Suns, Warriors, and Hornets. He has been performing well for the team, averaging 16.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in eight games.
With the 76ers relying on Oubre’s scoring at the start of the season, his absence will mean more playing time for the forwards acquired in the recent trade for James Harden: Nicolas Batum, Robert Covington, Marcus Morris, and KJ Martin. So far, only Batum and Covington have seen substantial playing time under head coach Nick Nurse.
The 76ers have made a strong start to the season with a 7-1 record, leading the Eastern Conference. Oubre has played a significant role in their success, with the team scoring nearly seven more points per 100 possessions with him on the court compared to when he’s on the bench. Finding a replacement for him will be a challenging task.
