MLB Rumors: Angels Pursuing Tim Anderson as Shohei Ohtani Not as Focused on Geography During Free Agency

The 2023-24 MLB offseason has been underway for almost two weeks, and significant moves are yet to happen. This is typical as the offseason progresses steadily. The non-tender deadline is on Friday, which usually leads to a burst of activity. Thus, there should be more action soon. Check out our top 50 free agents and top 25 trade candidates. Here are today’s hot stove rumors.

Geography may not be Ohtani’s top priority

According to MLB.com, joining a competitive team may be Shohei Ohtani’s top priority this offseason, rather than focusing on geography. It’s known that Ohtani desires to join a contender, stating “It sucks to lose,” in July. While it’s believed that he prefers the West Coast, the Angels have failed to make the postseason during any of Ohtani’s six seasons.

East Coast teams like the Braves, Mets, Phillies, Red Sox, and Yankees are expected to pursue Ohtani, with some, such as the Braves and Phillies, better equipped to contend immediately. While the Phillies and Yankees already have a full-time DH, the caliber of player is undeniable in Shohei Ohtani. If he’s open to joining a team, he would be signed, and adjustments would be made later.

Angels strongly interested in Anderson

Reported by USA Today, the Angels are highly interested in former White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson. If acquired, Anderson may be moved to second base, where he played two games in 2023 and also in the World Baseball Classic. Luis Rengifo is currently set at second base but is flexible enough to play elsewhere if the Halos secure Anderson.

Anderson, who is 30 years old, had a challenging 2023 season, leading the White Sox to decline his $14 million club option. Regardless, from 2019-22, Anderson consistently hit at least .301 each year, and his age suggests the potential for a return to his previous form with a change of scenery. In a thin free agent market for middle infielders, investing in Anderson is a reasonable gamble.

Braves want to add a starter

According to The Athletic, the defending NL East champion Braves are looking to add a starting pitcher and may be prepared to make a significant investment. Earlier in the offseason, the Braves exercised their $20 million club option on Charlie Morton, leaving an open spot in the No. 5 position behind Morton, Bryce Elder, Max Fried, and Spencer Strider. Michael Soroka could be a potential candidate for that spot.

Free agent Aaron Nola has a strong connection to Atlanta pitch coach Rick Kranitz, who was with the Phillies from 2016-18. It’s worth noting that Fried and Morton will become free agents after 2024. Signing a starter to a multi-year deal this offseason would provide the Braves with another top starter to pair with Strider in 2025 and beyond and wouldn’t preclude them from re-signing Fried.
