Tennis player Novak Djokovic concluded the 2023 season with a straight-set victory over Jannik Sinner, securing a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title. Djokovic had six ATP Finals titles coming into the tournament, tying with Roger Federer for the most ever.
The match took place in Italy, where Sinner, the home favorite, had previously defeated Djokovic in the group stage. Djokovic bounced back strongly, winning 20 out of 22 points on his serve in the first set and ultimately clinching the victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win in an hour and 43 minutes.
At 36 years old, Djokovic ends the year as the world’s No. 1 player for a record-extending eighth time. He also becomes the first player to hold the No. 1 rank for a total of 400 weeks. Throughout the year, he triumphed in the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open, bringing his total Grand Slam titles to a men’s record 24.
With as many Grand Slam titles as Djokovic, only Margaret Court, who played in the 1960s and ’70s, stands equal. Djokovic also made it to the 2023 Wimbledon title match, marking the first time anyone has reached the finals in all four majors in a single year since he achieved the feat in 2015.
“It’s very special,” Djokovic said after the match. “One of the best seasons I’ve had in my life no doubt.
“The way they have been playing, I had to step it up. I had to win the matches and not wait for them to hand me the victory, and that’s what I’ve done.”
