The Mike Elko era has begun in College Station after Texas A&M hired him as the replacement for Jimbo Fisher. Fisher was fired earlier in November after guiding the program for six seasons. Texas A&M’s approach to the terms of Elko’s deal is different from Fisher’s, with a six-year contract worth $42 million in total. Elko will have an annual salary of $7 million, with incentives including bonuses for postseason success. His contract also features a buyout clause and an $11,000,000 staff salary pool.
Elko’s incentives include monetary rewards for being named SEC Coach of the Year, winning a national coach of the year award, and making appearances in the SEC Championship Game. The contract also outlines a list of postseason incentives for Elko, with each achievement automatically resulting in a one-year contract extension.
Elko, who previously served as the coach at Duke, will start his Texas A&M tenure with a home game against Notre Dame. He previously worked as the defensive coordinator for Notre Dame in 2017 before joining Texas A&M as defensive coordinator in 2018.
