MLB Rumors: Giants Interested in Yoshinobu Yamamoto; Update on Shohei Ohtani’s Timeline; Padres and Yankees at Impasse Over Juan Soto

As the Winter Meetings commence, Major League Baseball’s flagship offseason event has brought about a flurry of rumors regarding free-agent signings and blockbuster trades. Today is no exception, so let’s delve into the latest buzz in the sport.

Giants have an edge for Yamamoto?

The Giants are reportedly pursuing Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and there is some speculation that they might have an advantage in the bidding, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He has a 45-day posting window that expires on 5 p.m. ET on Thursday, Jan. 4. Although Yamamoto is not expected to attend the Winter Meetings in Nashville, he is anticipated to begin meeting with teams face-to-face next week. The Giants, who have struggled to attract stars to San Francisco in recent offseasons, are seeking to re-energize their fan base and secure a strong pitcher in his prime. The 25-year-old Yamamoto recently won his third consecutive Pacific League MVP.

Ohtani’s decision coming soon

Shohei Ohtani, the most sought-after free agent this offseason, is likely to sign the largest contract in MLB history this winter. According to Jon Morosi, a decision on his future could be imminent. Ohtani is still recovering from an elbow procedure, which means he won’t pitch in 2024. However, he will continue to be one of the best power hitters in baseball, and starting in 2025, he is expected to resume pitching as an ace. Several teams, including the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, Blue Jays, incumbent Angels, are expected to be in the mix during the conclusion of this winter’s storyline.

The Padres and Yankees are reportedly engaged in extensive trade talks regarding young slugger Juan Soto, with the two sides reaching the stage of discussing specific names involved. Soto, one of the best hitters in the game, is just 25, but will be owed over $30 million for 2024 during his final trip through arbitration and 2024 will be his walk year. Despite his talent, he is also an expensive rental player. The potential trade remains a possibility, and Soto to the Yankees is still on the cards.

Hader aiming for record-breaking contract

Josh Hader, the best reliever on the free-agent market, is reportedly looking to sign the biggest contract ever for a reliever after an outstanding 2023 season with a 1.28 ERA, 85 strikeouts, and 28 unintentional walks in 56 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old’s performance has garnered attention after a sub-par 2022, and he and his representatives are now aiming for a deal that surpasses Edwin Díaz’s five-year, $102 million extension with the Mets.

Rays mulling Paredes trade

The Rays are reportedly willing to discuss trading third baseman Isaac Paredes as he prepares to go through the arbitration process for the first time. Paredes, 24, is coming off a strong 2023 season and has attracted interest from teams such as the Blue Jays and Mariners.

Brewers likely to bring back Miley

Veteran lefty Wade Miley, 37, is likely to return to the Brewers for 2024 and beyond after a solid 2023 season, where he posted an ERA of 3.14 and a K/BB ratio of 2.08 in 120 1/3 innings. Even if the Brewers trade ace Corbin Burnes, they will need reliable innings next year, and Miley promises just that.
