The Washington Capitals have signed Tom Wilson, a veteran forward, to a long-term extension, worth $45.5 million, as announced by the team on Friday. The contract is for seven years.
The extension will be effective from the beginning of the 2024-25 season, with an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $6.5 million. Wilson, who was drafted by the Capitals in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft, has been with the team for his entire career. This extension indicates the likelihood of Wilson retiring as a member of the Capitals.
Brian MacLellan, the Capitals’ general manager, expressed his confidence that Wilson will continue to make significant contributions to the team in the future. MacLellan stated, “Tom possesses all the intangibles needed to win in this League and we are extremely pleased to sign him to a long-term contract, giving him the opportunity to finish his career in a Capitals’ uniform. Throughout his career, Tom has improved every facet of his game through his drive and competitiveness. We feel his work ethic and leadership qualities will be a tremendous asset to our organization for years to come.”
Throughout his career, Wilson has played 680 games with the Capitals, establishing himself as a hard-nosed power forward. He has scored 128 goals, provided 167 assists, and recorded 295 points.
In the 2018 playoffs, Wilson played a crucial role in the Capitals’ first-ever Stanley Cup win. He contributed five goals and 15 points in 21 games.
In the 2022-23 season, Wilson was sidelined for a significant period due to a torn ACL and a separate ankle injury. He appeared in only 33 games, scoring 13 goals and adding nine assists.
