Wimbledon 2023: Increased security presence will be at All England Club in response to recent UK protests

There will be a greater security presence at Wimbledon to prevent protesters from disrupting the prestigious grass court Grand Slam tournament. This decision comes in light of recent protests at other sporting events in England.

All England Lawn Tennis Club Operations Director Michelle Dite assured reporters that plans are in place to minimize risks and that specialist agencies and the Metropolitan Police are involved in the security arrangements. Swift response from appropriate specialist teams will be provided in the event of any incident to safeguard the players, staff, and visitors at the tournament.

Notably, in a recent cricket test match between England and Australia at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, three protesters from the group Just Stop Oil, who had previously thrown soup on Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers,” caused disruption. Saracens and Sale’s Premiership Rugby finals at Twickenham Stadium were also briefly disrupted by the same group last month. Activists also interrupted the World Snooker Championship by jumping on a table and throwing orange powder, which was used in the cricket and rugby protests as well. A large group of animal rights protesters forced their way into the Aintree Racecourse during the annual Grand National horse race in April.

Last year, protests during tennis events included a woman tying herself to the net at the French Open and a man setting his arm on fire at the Laver Cup.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club recognizes that Wimbledon is highly prestigious and attracts significant attention, making it a potential target for activists. Therefore, the club is taking steps to ensure the safety and security of all attendees.

Guests attending Wimbledon will not be allowed to bring items that could disrupt the event, such as glue, chains, or the orange powder used in previous protests, as stated in the 2023 Wimbledon Conditions of Entry.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club collaborates closely with the Metropolitan Police and other relevant organizations throughout the year to ensure the safety of the event. Security plans have been reviewed in light of recent events and have been increased accordingly.

The 136th Wimbledon Championships are scheduled to take place from July 3-16.
