Novak Djokovic is one step closer to his fourth US Open title as he defeated Ben Shelton in the men’s semifinal with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Shelton, a 20-year-old American, put up a good fight but couldn’t match Djokovic’s performance. After winning the first set, Djokovic continued to dominate the match.
Although Djokovic won in straight sets, Shelton showed determination in the third set and forced a tiebreak. Despite a strong comeback from Shelton, Djokovic ultimately came out on top and advanced to the US Open final.
After the match, Djokovic expressed his appreciation for the challenging environment and competition. He credited the crowd for motivating him.
Ben Shelton’s performance in this tournament was his best in a Grand Slam so far, a significant improvement from his previous US Open appearance in 2022 where he was eliminated in the first round.
This will be Djokovic’s 10th appearance in the US Open final, his first since 2021 when he lost to Daniil Medvedev. Djokovic last won the championship in 2018 against Juan Martin del Potro.
Djokovic will now await the winner of Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev, the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds, respectively.
