The New Jersey Devils have signed Timo Meier, a star forward, to an eight-year contract worth $70.4 million. Meier, who was set to become a restricted free agent, agreed to the long-term deal before July 1.

Meier had a stellar season, scoring 40 goals, and was acquired by the Devils from the San Jose Sharks before the 2023 trade deadline. In his 21 regular season games with New Jersey last year, he scored nine goals in 21 games, and he added four points in 11 playoff games.

Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald expressed excitement about keeping Meier on the team as they aim for another Stanley Cup win.

“We were thrilled to get Timo during the deadline, and it’s even better knowing he’ll be here for the next eight seasons,” Fitzgerald said. “Timo’s unique playing style, goal-scoring ability, and physical presence will be valuable for us. In our conversations, Timo recognized, and I always believed, that this is the right place for him as a player and a person. We’ve secured another part of our young core as we strive for greater success together.”

Meier, the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, emerged as a star with the Sharks. In his third NHL season, he scored 30 goals, and since then, he has been one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers. Throughout his 472 career games, Meier has amassed 163 goals and 167 assists for 330 points.

With Meier now signed for the long term, the Devils boast one of the NHL’s strongest forward groups. The team already had Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Nico Hischier under contract until the 2026-27 season, and Fitzgerald has been busy adding more elite talent.

Just a day before signing Meier, the Devils acquired winger Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames. Toffoli had a 34-goal season, providing another offensive weapon for head coach Lindy Ruff.
