The Los Angeles Kings have announced that they have acquired center Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets in a sign-and-trade deal. In exchange for Dubois, the Jets will receive Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari, and a 2024 second-round pick.
Dubois, who was about to become a restricted free agent, signed an eight-year contract worth $85 million with the Jets before being traded to the Kings. The 25-year-old Dubois had a successful season in Winnipeg, scoring 63 points, and has been a reliable top-six center throughout his career in the NHL.
Dubois was originally selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the third overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. He spent three seasons with the Blue Jackets before being traded to the Jets in 2021. In 195 games with the Jets, Dubois scored 63 goals and provided 80 assists.
The Kings are hoping that Dubois can continue to improve and eventually take over as the first-line center once Anze Kopitar retires. Los Angeles general manager Rob Blake has expressed excitement about having Dubois on the team and believes he will be an important asset for the organization in the coming years.
After their early exit from the playoffs, the Jets have decided to make changes to their roster during the offseason, and this trade is a significant step in that direction.
Vilardi, who was selected 11th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, had a breakout season with 23 goals in 68 games, along with displaying strong defensive skills. He is seen as the most intriguing part of the return for the Jets.
Iafallo, a middle-six forward, has been a consistent performer for the Kings over the past six seasons. In the last season, he recorded 36 points in 59 games. He will provide valuable depth for the Jets in the upcoming years.
Kupari, selected 20th overall in 2018, has yet to establish himself at the NHL level. He recorded 15 points in 66 games last season but has the potential to take on a larger role in Winnipeg.
