Devon Toews has agreed to a seven-year contract extension worth $50.75 million with the Colorado Avalanche. The extension will begin next year, and Toews will play out the final year of his current contract in 2023-24. After that, his annual salary cap hit will be $7.25 million per year until the 2030-31 season. Toews has become an integral part of the Avalanche’s defense since being acquired by the team in 2020. Alongside Cale Makar, Toews helped the Avs win the Stanley Cup in 2022. Toews expressed his excitement about staying with the Avalanche and his goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Colorado.
Prior to the 2020-21 season, Toews was traded from the New York Islanders to the Avalanche in exchange for a pair of second-round draft picks. In his time with the Avs, Toews has recorded 29 goals and 110 assists, demonstrating his dominance at five-on-five play. Last season, Colorado had strong control of expected and actual goals with Toews on the ice at five-on-five.
Toews is a top defenseman on most teams but is considered a luxury for the Avalanche due to the presence of Makar. The two defensemen will continue playing together at least until the 2026-27 season.
