The second half of the 2023 college football season has arrived and CBS Sports Network is once again hosting a great lineup of games in Week 8.
After a break from FBS action on Thursday and Friday, Saturday brings three games to the schedule. The noon ET window will feature a MAC matchup between Ohio and Western Michigan. Ohio had a five-game winning streak before their upset loss to Northern Illinois in Week 7. Now, they will try to regain momentum at home against Western Michigan, who have lost five of their last six games.
The afternoon game will be a nonconference match between UConn and South Florida. UConn, coming off a bye, won their first game of the season against Rice in Week 6 after starting 0-5. Meanwhile, South Florida is looking to avoid a three-game losing streak after losing to UAB and FAU in the past two weeks. The evening game will feature Mountain West action as San Jose State hosts Utah State. Utah State lost a close game against Fresno State in Week 7, while San Jose State snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating New Mexico.

The odds favor Ohio in this game, and for good reason. Ohio has one of the top defenses in college football, allowing opponents to gain only 245.1 yards and score 13.43 points on average. These numbers rank in the top 10 in the FBS. Western Michigan has the second-best offense in the MAC, averaging 377.4 yards per game, but they will likely struggle against the tough Ohio defense. The most points Ohio has given up in a game this season is 23 in their loss to Northern Illinois.

After finally getting their first win of the season in Week 6, can UConn continue their winning streak? They scored a season-high 38 points against Rice and now face a struggling South Florida team. South Florida’s defense ranks near the bottom of the AAC and has given up 56 points in their last two games, both losses. South Florida’s offense also struggled in their last outing, scoring only 14 points in a Week 7 loss to FAU.

Utah State brings one of the top offenses in the FBS to the Bay Area, averaging 477.9 yards per game. The majority of their production comes from their passing attack, which is averaging 305.6 yards per game, ranking 17th in the FBS. However, they will face a tough San Jose State defense that is second in the Mountain West against the pass, allowing only 186.1 passing yards per game. On the other hand, San Jose State ranks last in the conference against the run, giving up 210.3 rushing yards per game. Utah State ranks fourth in the Mountain West in rushing, averaging 172.3 yards per game, which could give them an opportunity to exploit San Jose State’s weakness and potentially secure an upset win on the road.
