Who gets home-field advantage in the World Series?
The team with the best regular-season record will have home-field advantage in the World Series. This year, it is more difficult to determine as three of the four remaining teams finished with the same record of 90-72. The Rangers, Astros, and Phillies all had 90 wins, while the Diamondbacks had 84 wins. When teams have the same record, the head-to-head tiebreaker is used.
Here’s how it will work for each team. The team with home-field advantage will host Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 (if necessary).
- Rangers: Will have home-field advantage in World Series if they advance
- Astros: Will have home-field advantage in World Series vs. Diamondbacks
- Phillies: Will have home-field advantage in World Series vs. Astros
- Diamondbacks: Will not have home-field advantage in World Series
The Rangers, despite being the No. 5 seed in the American League and not having home-field advantage in the postseason so far, will have home-field advantage in the World Series if they win two more games. This is because they lost the season series to the Astros, but they swept the Phillies in the season-opening series.
The Phillies could also have an early season series to thank for home-field advantage if they reach the World Series against the Astros. They won two of three games against the Astros in late April at Minute Maid Park.
