No. 5 Washington managed to overcome four turnovers and a subpar performance from star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to narrowly defeat Arizona State, 15-7, and avoid a major upset after their impressive win against Oregon last week. Despite maintaining a lead for most of the game, the Sun Devils, now 1-6, were unable to hold onto it. In a critical moment during the fourth quarter, Washington’s defense came through with a game-changing interception by Mishael Powell, who returned it for an 89-yard touchdown. Despite failing to convert the 2-point conversion, Washington took a 12-7 lead and held onto it until the end. The pick six was the only touchdown scored by Washington, and it was their first win without an offensive touchdown since 2001.

Washington turned over the ball on four of their first six possessions, giving Arizona State advantageous field position twice. This included an interception by Penix on Washington’s opening drive, placing the Sun Devils at first-and-10 on the Huskies’ 23-yard line. Nonetheless, Washington’s defense prevented Arizona State from capitalizing on these opportunities, allowing only a single touchdown from the turnovers.

Penix’s Heisman Hopes Take a Hit

Saturday’s victory came at a cost for the Huskies, as Penix, the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy before the game, lost some ground in the race. Penix’s odds to win the prestigious award have dropped to +260, with Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy now leading at +200. Penix will need to prove himself beyond the win against Oregon to regain his position. Saturday’s performance did not help his case, as he committed four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles) and failed to score any touchdowns against an Arizona State defense that typically allows over 28 points per game. Additionally, Penix completed just 27 of his 42 pass attempts, marking his second-worst completion rate of the season.
