Syracuse’s Dino Babers was fired on Sunday after the Orange’s loss to Georgia Tech. During his tenure, Babers had a record of 41-55 with the program and only two winning seasons. This comes after a successful period from 1995-2001 when the program finished ranked in the AP top 25 five times in a seven-year span. However, the next head coach will have a rebuilding job on his hands based on the program’s current state of disarray. The potential of the program combined with its spot in the ACC will make the job attractive to several established candidates and up-and-comers. Here’s a list of potential candidates.
Syracuse coaching candidates
Ex-Mississippi State, Florida coach Dan Mullen: Mullen had a successful run in major college football at Mississippi State and Florida. His familiarity with the program and the region makes him a strong candidate for the Syracuse head coach position.
Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis: Lewis has the knowledge of the challenges that exist within the Orange, having previously worked as the Syracuse co-offensive coordinator.
Ex-Syracuse, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone: Marrone had a successful run as the head coach of Syracuse from 2009-2012, including a Pinstripe Bowl win over West Virginia. His subsequent experience in the NFL could bring valuable insights to the program.
James Madison coach Curt Cignetti: With an impressive track record at James Madison and previous success at the FCS level, Cignetti is another potential candidate for the Syracuse head coach position.
Liberty coach Jamey Chadwell: Chadwell has a strong track record of success, with notable achievements at Coastal Carolina and an undefeated regular season with Liberty. His ability to develop explosive offenses could make him a valuable addition to the Syracuse program.
Tulane coach Willie Fritz: With a strong coaching record and recent success at Tulane, Fritz is another potential candidate for the Syracuse head coach position.
