As the August 1 trade deadline approaches in Major League Baseball, teams are making plans to buy or sell leading up to this crucial point in the baseball calendar. Rumors are swirling as teams lay the groundwork for potential major trades.
Angels Engaged in Trade Discussions for Ohtani
The Los Angeles Angels are reportedly engaged in trade discussions for Shohei Ohtani, although it is unlikely they will trade the two-way superstar before the deadline. The Angels are still in contention for the postseason and trading Ohtani would jeopardize their chances. They are, however, considering offers from contenders as the deadline approaches.
Ohtani’s value lies in his abilities as both a starting pitcher and a power hitter, making him an attractive trade target. While it is unlikely that the Angels will trade him, they are exploring their options.
Mets Unlikely to Trade Scherzer and Verlander
The New York Mets, despite having the highest payroll in MLB history, are considering becoming sellers. However, trading veteran aces Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander seems unlikely at this point. Both pitchers have not been approached about potential trades and parting with them would damage the Mets’ aim to return to contention in 2024.
Pirates Open to Trade Offers for All-Star Pitchers
The Pittsburgh Pirates, currently out of playoff contention, are open to trade offers for starting pitcher Mitch Keller and closer David Bednar. However, it is not very likely that either pitcher will be traded. The Pirates are in sell mode but will only make a move if they receive a favorable offer.
Reds Considering Trading India
The Cincinnati Reds, looking to strengthen their rotation, may be willing to trade infielder Jonathan India. India is having a solid season and is under team control until 2026. The Reds’ surplus of young infielders has made India expendable.
Braves Acquire Relievers to Bolster Bullpen
The Atlanta Braves have acquired right-handed reliever Pierce Johnson from the Colorado Rockies and lefty reliever Taylor Hearn from the Texas Rangers. Johnson has a 6.00 ERA this season, but his strikeout numbers are promising. Hearn has limited experience this season but adds depth to the Braves’ bullpen.
