Klay Thompson had an impressive season last year, leading the NBA in total 3-pointers and shooting 41% from deep. He is in the final season of his contract with the Golden State Warriors and has been in extension talks with the organization. However, there has been no progress in reaching an extension, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. If no deal is reached, Thompson could become a free agent next summer.
Last season, Thompson made 301 3-pointers in 69 games, averaged 21.9 points, and had a career-best 4.1 rebounds per game.
The issue with Thompson goes beyond performance and finances, as he has become a beloved figure in the Bay Area and has played a crucial role in the Warriors’ success. Former Warriors general manager Bob Myers spoke about Thompson’s importance to the team:
“This is not a just-business situation. This guy — there’s gonna be a statue of this player outside of Chase Center. He was instrumental in bringing four championships. He’s beloved inside the organization, the fanbase. So it’s not so simple as it’s money and years.”
In addition to his on-court skills, Thompson’s versatility and ability to play multiple positions make him an attractive player for potential suitors if he becomes a free agent.
“This is a delicate negotiation,” Myers added. “[Thompson] wants to stay. They want him to stay. Doesn’t mean it’ll happen. But it is a test. It’s certainly a test.”
