In a surprising turn of events, Toronto Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker was ejected during their game against the San Diego Padres. This happened in the second inning, following previous discontent with some calls by Walker and Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
During a meeting on the mound with starting pitcher Alek Manoah, home plate umpire Malachi Moore approached them. Despite not making eye contact with Moore and keeping his back turned, Walker was ejected.
The exact words exchanged between Walker and Moore are still unknown, but Manoah did not believe it warranted an ejection.
“I don’t think he said anything that would’ve got you thrown out of a 10-year-old travel ball park,” said Manoah postgame.
Unsurprisingly, Schneider defended Walker’s actions, saying, “I’ll let Pete speak to that, but we’re always gonna defend our guys.”
The loss snapped the Blue Jays’ four-game winning streak, but they will have a chance to bounce back in their upcoming games against the Padres on Wednesday and Thursday.
